Summer Hair Routine - How to Keep Your Hair Shining under the Sun
After staying inside for some time, we're all eager to step outside and get our share of the coveted summer sun. Some of us can visit the beach, go to parks, enjoy outdoor activities (with health measure in consideration, of course). But after all that day outside, our hair gets the beating.
Between all the exposure of sun, sand, sea and air, our glorious mains can get entangled in some damaging mess. Our goal is to finish the summer with our hair still healthy and vibrant. Today, we're going to check out helpful routines and tips to keep our locks shining.
Why does summer cause damaged hair?
Hairstylist and legend Earl Simms explains to us why summer causes our hair to dry off.
"The sun gives off harmful rays that dry the hair, particularly hair that is chemically treated."
We're nodding because this one makes sense. But did you know that even certain styling appliances cause damage? Simms adds:
"Chlorine from swimming pools and generally hair getting wet in the pool or sea and then drying in the sun repeatedly through the day takes its toll."
With that in mind, we can't just 'let our hair down' and hope for the best. We need a gameplan that will keep our tresses gorgeous in all seasons.
The Summer Hair Care Routine
Wear A Hat
Some of us skip the hat because, in the heat, it can sometimes cause "hat hair." You know, the shape our hair makes after we wear a hat all day. But wearing a hat keeps your hair protected from sun damage. Many influencers also wear a hat as an added protection from viral exposure. Whether you ascribe to that or not, it is a chic way to go out. A hairband or scarf can also protect our hair. If you think your head isn't made for hats, Simms advises: '...if you prefer, apply lots of conditioner to your hair before you go in the sun and leave it in all day; this will help the hair to nourish and rehydrate.'
Use A Hair Mask
Dozens of hair experts believe that hair masks should be used as frequently as once a week. This is important to help hair to grow back into nourishment.
There are more natural, DIY masks you can also try at home. Olive oil, aloe vera, coconut oil are some safe and organic products.
Use Hydrating Shampoos and Conditioners
There are tons of new products in the market that promise to deeply hydrate and moisturize your hair. Choose the one that fits your budget. Finish off your routine with hair oil or serum and work through the ends.
Visit the Salon
You'll need to schedule in advance and make sure to be safe. But to keep your hair healthy, get a deep conditioning service. Also, ask the stylist to trim your hair to revive the tips.
Avoid the straighteners
Finally and most importantly - leave the heating tools alone. The humidity and sun exposure to your hair will dry it out enough. You don't want to add more stress to it by way of a hair straightener or curler. Choose more natural styling techniques that give life and volume without damage.
