When Life Gives You Lemons: Drink Lemon Infused Water Every Day

The first time I ever saw floating lemon in a pitcher of water was in a fancy restaurant. As a kid, it fascinated me. I was even more excited when the waiter poured me a glass because I thought it was for the adults only.

To be honest, I don't remember what it tasted like to me then. But I remember wanting all our water containers at home to have lemons too. When I started seeing a few water bottles in the gym with lemon-infused water, it got me excited again.

Drinking soda has always been my sugar slash health issue. But ever since I started adding lemon to my water, I haven't craved soda pop in a very long time! The drink is refreshing, but you know it's not sugary.

Lemon infused water or lemon water is a healthy option than you can swap with the dangerous flavoured drinks infesting the market. Not only that, adding lemon to your water helps you take in more vitamins and nutrients.

If you're not convinced about the powers of lemon, look at these health benefits and consider adding them to your daily water intake.

Drinking Lemon Water Increases Your Vitamin C Intake

I will assume you have other sources of vitamin C. If you do not, then adding lemon to your water is a great way to start.

The juice from one lemon has over 30mg of vitamin C. The recommended daily allowance for females is 75 mg, while it is 90 mg for males. So adding lemon water to your drink gives your 30-40% of the vitamin C you need to be healthy every day.

We all need vitamin C because it helps us stay healthy in so many ways:

1.    Vitamin C helps your body heal - vitamin C makes collagen. When we get wounds, collagen is necessary to form parts of the connective tissue so your body can heal.

2.    Vitamin C supports your immune system - in a year when health is of utmost importance. We all need vitamin C to fight off any illnesses caused by virus and bacteria. Drink lemons even before you develop any cold symptoms.

3.    Vitamin C improves iron absorption - having the required amount of vitamin c in your body increases the absorption of iron. Drink lemon water with meals to enhance iron absorption.

Drinking Lemon Water Aids in Weight Loss

Proper water drinking, in general, dramatically helps you lose weight. Some people will find it a little bland though to chug water all day. Lemon water is a perfect replacement for sugary beverages. No soda means lesser calorie intake, which means weight loss.

We talk more about increasing water intake in our previous blog:

Stay Hydrated: Beverages that Count to Water-Intake

There are many ways to add lemon to your daily drinking habit. Some recommend adding the juice to a cup of hot water and drinking it first thing in the morning. Others suggest drinking right before meals. Research and figure out what works best for you and consult a dietitian.
